Aryez hound

History of the Aryez hound breed

Origin: France

The breed was formed in the 19th century in Ariège in southern France from several French hounds, in particular Gascon. During the Second World War, it almost disappeared, and then it was restored by the purposeful work of breeders. It is rare outside of France.

Aries hound - a small hardy French hound with a fine sense of smell. Gentle with the family, but the hunting instinct is strong, and the need for movement is high. Needs a safe space, nose work and careful call training.

Life is nearby

More suitable for a country house with a fenced plot than an apartment or first owner experience. One walk a day is not enough. The hound is loud, tenacious and can follow a scent, so control is essential.

Walks

A healthy adult dog needs frequent and long-term activities: trails, olfactory tasks, running. One walk is not enough. Free running is possible only in the fenced area. The load of puppies and elderly dogs is adjusted with the veterinarian.

Training

Intelligent, but independent: easily ignored by teams on the trail. Olfactory games, valuable treats and short activities work. Calling is practiced on a long leash, and free running is allowed only in a safe area.

Care

The short, smooth coat is brushed about four times a week with a brush with stiff bristles. They bathe as needed. Long ears are examined and cleaned weekly, because the breed is prone to their inflammation. Claws are regularly trimmed and teeth are brushed.

Children

Gentle and patient, usually a good companion for children. Strangers can be wary. An adult monitors contact, and leaves a separate resting place for the dog.

Other animals

Usually peaceful with other dogs. It was bred to hunt small game, so cats, rabbits and rodents can be perceived as prey. Acquaintance with them is carried out gradually and under control.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

3/5

Average score: The hound is gentle with the family, but works independently. Actual behavior depends on socialization.

Training

4,5/5

The breed responds well to olfactory work and rewards, but is stubborn on the trail. The appeal needs constant repetition.

Zooaggression

3/5

Average score: with other dogs, the "Aryezhsky hound" breed is usually peaceful, and small animals are evaluated separately due to their hunting instinct.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

The survival rate of the "Aryez Hound" breed in the British cohort is not comparable. The absence of the described risks does not guarantee the absence of hereditary diseases, so the breeder is asked for the results of the parents' examinations.

Ease of care

3/5

Average rating: The coat is brushed about four times a week and the ears need weekly attention.

Health

Breed screening

Breed Screening: Little is known about the health of this rare breed. Hip and elbow dysplasia and eye diseases are described. Ask the breeder for documentary results of examinations of both parents.

Locomotor apparatus

Musculoskeletal system: growth and load should correspond to age. Lameness, pain, or reluctance to move require a veterinary examination. After hunting or long walks, paws and skin are examined for injuries.

Eyes and heart

A preventive examination includes an evaluation of the eyes, heart, and ears. Long hanging ears are prone to infections, so they are cleaned and dried.
