THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: Great Britain
It originates from the north of England in the 19th century, where small woolly terriers were used for hunting vermin and for racing. Bedlingtons became fashionable among the wealthy, and by the end of the century appeared at exhibitions. The breed has never been very common in the US.
The Bedlington Terrier is an unusual terrier with a soft, curly coat and a lamb-like profile. Playful, but calm at home, attached to people. Needs regular haircuts, walks and a test for copper toxicosis in a puppy.

Suitable for families who want a companion that is calm at home and lively outside. The dog wants to be close to people. Can bark, is wary of strangers at first. The hunting instinct of the terrier remains, therefore free running only in a fenced area.
A healthy adult dog needs moderate exercise: a daily walk or play. The load of puppies and elderly dogs is adjusted with the veterinarian.
Smart, but terrier-willed. A variety of short activities, treats and games are available. Calling is practiced early, because small animals easily arouse the instinct of pursuit.
The characteristic "lamb" haircut is difficult to repeat without experience, so many owners use the services of a groomer. The coat is combed every few days, the teeth are regularly brushed and the claws trimmed.
Usually gentle with children, especially if he grew up around them. An adult monitors the contact, and the rules of a calm game are explained to the child.
The hunting instinct can be manifested towards rodents, cats and other small animals, so introductions are carried out gradually. Early socialization is required with dogs.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.
Average score: The breed bonds with people but remains independent like most terriers. Actual behavior depends on socialization.
Neutral assessment: there is no sufficient comparative data on the Bedlington Terrier breed. The behavior of a particular dog depends on socialization and experience.
Average score: contact with other dogs and small animals needs assessment due to hunting instinct.
In the British cohort, the median lifespan of the breed was 13.7 years. Among the described breed risks: dysplasia of the elbow joints, disorders of the thyroid gland, von Willebrand's disease. The examination of the parents is confirmed with the veterinarian.
Below average: Curly coat needs regular brushing and professional trimming.
Elbow dysplasia is mentioned as a possible risk. The need for examinations is determined by the veterinarian, and the results of the parents' assessment should be asked from the breeder.
Thyroid disorders are mentioned as a possible risk. Symptoms: weight gain, lethargy, dry skin. Diagnosis is carried out by a blood test.
Von Willebrand's disease is a blood coagulation disorder. There are tests, so ask the breeder for the results. For the breed, the most well-known risk is copper toxicosis of the liver: the test for it is done before breeding. Kidney and eye diseases are also described.
