Bergamo shepherd dog

🇮🇹

History of the Bergam Sheepdog breed

Origin: Italy

The breed is ancient and, according to some versions, its ancestors lived in the territory of modern Iran about 7,000 years ago. They came to Italy later, where they grazed and guarded sheep in the Alps. The breed retains herding skills even today.

The Bergamo shepherd dog is a herding dog with special flat strands of hair that form "flocats". Patient, intelligent and independent, calm and does not bark much. Requires moderate movement and attention to coat.

Life is nearby

Suitable for people who have space and time for walks. The dog is gentle and loyal to its family, and is calm and confident towards strangers. Vigilant like a watchman, but does not bark much.

Walks

Moderate energy: several walks a day, fetch games, hikes. Sometimes free movement in a safe area. The load of puppies and elderly dogs is adjusted with the veterinarian.

Training

Smart, hardworking, but independent. Reward training, early socialization and consistent rules work best. Does not tolerate rough treatment.

Care

At approximately one year of age, the wool is manually separated into flat strands so that the flocks are formed correctly. After that, daily combing is not necessary, but the wool is not shaved, because it regulates the temperature. Daily brushing and nail trimming are required.

Children

With socialization and training can be a good companion for children. It is large, so an adult monitors the contact.

Other animals

Under the supervision of familiarization usually gets along with other dogs and cats. Herding instinct needs control.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

3/5

Average score: the breed is devoted to the family, but independent. Actual behavior depends on socialization.

Training

3/5

The rating is average, because there is a lack of comparative data on the "Bergham shepherd dog" breed. Actual behavior depends on upbringing, socialization and experience.

Zooaggression

3/5

Average score: contact with other dogs and cats depends on socialization and supervision.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

The survival rate of the "Bergham Shepherd" breed in the British cohort is not comparable. The absence of the described risks does not guarantee the absence of hereditary diseases, so the breeder is asked for the results of the parents' examinations.

Ease of care

5/5

High score for daily brushing: after formation, the flocked coat is not combed, but the initial formation and drying takes time.

Health

Breed screening

Breed screening: describe hip dysplasia, gastric volvulus and eye diseases. Ask the breeder for documentary results of examinations of both parents.

Locomotor apparatus

Musculoskeletal system: growth and load should correspond to age. Lameness, pain, or reluctance to move require a veterinary examination. Weight control is important for a large breed.

Eyes and heart

A preventive examination includes an evaluation of the eyes, heart and skin under flocati. Among the described conditions is gastric volvulus: know the signs (unsuccessful attempts to vomit, distended stomach, restlessness) and go to the vet immediately.
