Blue Gascon Basset

🇫🇷

History of the Blue Gascon Basset breed

Origin: France

The breed appeared in the Middle Ages from the older big blue Gascon hound. Count Gaston III of Foix-Béarn is associated with a pack of these dogs for hunting wild boars and wolves. At the beginning of the 19th century, the breed almost disappeared, and enthusiasts helped to save it. It is currently recognized by the UKC, but not by the AKC.

Blue Gascon Basset - a small French hound with a short dense coat with "blue" dots. Friendly, loud and persistent on the trail. Needs smell work, safe walking and attention to ears and back.

Life is nearby

Suitable for people who like leisurely walks and olfactory work. Basset is loud, loves company and does not tolerate long loneliness. Due to the long housing, stairs and jumps are limited.

Walks

A healthy adult dog needs walks and sniffing every day. Free running is possible only in the fenced area. The load of puppies and elderly dogs is adjusted with the veterinarian.

Training

An independent hunter, so training requires patience. Olfactory games, valuable treats and short activities work. The call is practiced on a long leash.

Care

The short dense coat is combed approximately once a week, and more often during the shedding period. Long ears are cleaned and dried, claws are trimmed and teeth are taken care of.

Children

Usually friendly and patient, but the child is taught not to pick up the dog by its front legs and not to pull its long ears. Contact takes place under the supervision of an adult.

Other animals

The Blue Gascon Basset Hound usually gets along well with other dogs. Small animals can be perceived as prey, so introductions are carried out gradually.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

4/5

Moderately high score: the breed is sociable, but works independently. Actual behavior depends on socialization.

Training

3/5

Average score: There is no comparable data for the Blue Gascon Basset breed, so the score is neutral. The actual behavior depends on the socialization and experience of the particular dog.

Zooaggression

3/5

Average score: With other dogs, the Blue Gascon Basset breed is usually peaceful, and small animals are rated separately due to their hunting instinct.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

There is no comparative assessment of the survival of the Blue Gascon basset breed in a British cohort. The absence of said risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases, so screening of parents is important.

Ease of care

3/5

Average rating: the coat is combed once a week, and the ears need regular attention.

Health

Breed screening

Pedigree screening: detailed data on hereditary diseases of this rare breed is scarce. Ask the breeder for documentary results of examinations of both parents and current recommendations of the club.

Locomotor apparatus

Musculoskeletal system: growth and load should correspond to age. Lameness, pain, or reluctance to move require a veterinary examination. A long back is vulnerable, so jumping is limited.

Eyes and heart

A preventive examination includes an evaluation of the eyes, heart, and ears. Long hanging ears are cleaned and dried.
