THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: Former USSR
It is believed that the breed originated from ancient Caucasian dogs, which were used to protect herds, flocks and settlements from predators. Breeding work with it in the USSR began in the 1920s.
The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a very large, massive guard: males about 72-75 cm at the withers and at least 50 kg, females about 67-70 cm. Steady, confident, fearless and independent, devoted to the owner. This is not a dog for beginners: it needs space, strict socialization and an owner who knows how to manage a large guard breed.

Only suitable for a private house with a large strong fence and an experienced owner. A strong protective instinct means that guests, neighbors and passers-by need thoughtful interaction. The apartment is excluded.
Movement is free and elastic. Needs daily walks and space to patrol the territory, but does not require extreme loads. Puppies and teenagers are restricted from jumping.
Independent and self-confident, therefore training begins from a puppy age and builds on consistency and authority without rudeness. Early socialization with people, dogs and sounds is a must. The breed is not suitable for a beginner.
Coarse wool with a well-developed undercoat is combed at least once a week, more often during the shedding period. Ears, claws and teeth are examined regularly, and the mobility of a large dog is controlled.
Devoted to the family, but its size, strength and protective nature require constant supervision of contact with children. The child's friends are taught to behave with restraint, and the dog is kept under control in such situations.
Territorial guard: unfamiliar dogs and other animals in his territory can cause a reaction. Dating takes place in a controlled manner, and socialization is necessary from an early age.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.
Average score: devoted to the owner, but independent and self-confident. Behavior depends on upbringing.
Average score: intelligent but independent, so authority and consistency are needed.
Low rating: Territorial guard, unfamiliar animals can cause reactions.
In the British cohort, the median lifespan of the breed was 5.4 years; small sample: 22 deaths. The absence of the mentioned risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases.
Low rating: size, thick coat and heavy shedding make grooming labor intensive.
Breed screening: little is known about hereditary diseases of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog breed. The breeder is asked for documents with the results of examinations of both parents and current recommendations of the club.
Musculoskeletal apparatus: the growth and load of the dog of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog breed are coordinated with its age. If lameness or pain occurs, a veterinary examination is required.
During preventive examinations, the eyes, heart and ears of Caucasian Shepherd dogs are evaluated. The frequency of additional checks is agreed with the breed club and the veterinarian.
