THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: Great Britain
The breed originates from England, and the name "spaniel" probably has Spanish roots. Previously, springers and cocker spaniels were indistinguishable: larger puppies lifted birds from thickets, smaller ones worked for woodcock. The AKC recognized the Springer in 1910. Today, there are working and exhibition lines that differ in energy level.
The English Springer Spaniel is a lively field spaniel that seeks out and raises game. Friendly, persistent and very energetic, works great with his nose. Needs daily movement, mental tasks and careful ear care.

Suitable for an active family that walks and plays every day. He is very attached to people, so long loneliness worries him. Loves water, mud and olfactory adventures, so safe areas and patience for mud are needed.
A healthy adult dog needs at least an hour of activity every day: running, swimming, sniffing tasks, fetch games. Without mental load, he is bored. The load of puppies and elderly dogs is adjusted with the veterinarian.
Friendly and willing to please, but independent in the field. Reward training works best, especially with sniff, fetch, and search activities. Calling is practiced from puppyhood, and energy is directed to sports: agility, flyball, nose work.
The wool is combed approximately three times a week, and during the seasonal molt every day. They bathe approximately every six weeks, regularly trim their claws, brush their teeth. Long hanging ears are inspected daily and dried after water.
Usually gets along well with children, especially schoolchildren. An energetic dog can knock down a baby in a game, so an adult monitors the contact and leaves a separate place for the dog to rest.
Friendly to other dogs. The hunting instinct can work on cats, birds and rodents, so acquaintance is carried out gradually. Early socialization helps.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

In the British cohort, the median lifespan of the breed was 13.5 years. Among the described breed risks: hip dysplasia. The examination of the parents is confirmed with the veterinarian.
Medium-high score: the coat is combed several times a week, and the ears are examined daily.
Hip dysplasia is mentioned in the breed profile as a possible risk. Elbow dysplasia, ear inflammation, epilepsy, and hereditary phosphofructokinase deficiency are described among other issues that occur in the breed. The veterinarian determines the need for examinations and DNA tests.
