English toy terrier

History of the English Toy Terrier breed

Origin: Great Britain

This is one of the oldest British miniature breeds. She was once called a miniature black and tan terrier, but the name was changed because any such terrier could be called that. Today, the British Kennel Club classifies the breed as vulnerable local, that is, few.

The English Toy Terrier is a slender miniature terrier with a black and tan color. Inquisitive, attached to the owner and sensitive watchman. Needs careful handling, protection from the cold and the company of people.

Life is nearby

Suitable for living in an apartment and in a family where the dog is given attention. Shoulder height approximately 25-30 cm, weight 2.7-3.6 kg. Due to its fragile structure, careful handling is required, and you should not leave it at home for the whole day.

Walks

About 30 minutes of activity a day is enough for a healthy adult dog: walks, games, short runs. Kneels down, but movement is needed. The load of puppies and elderly dogs is adjusted with the veterinarian.

Training

Smart, loyal to the master, but can be stubborn. Short classes, treats and patience work. Accustoming to the environment and strangers begins early, because the breed is reserved towards strangers and willingly barks at an alarm signal.

Care

Short hair needs brushing about once a week. It sheds moderately, so there is little hair. Claws are regularly trimmed, teeth and ears are cleaned.

Children

Due to its fragile structure, it is better suited to a family with older children who know how to handle the dog carefully. The baby is not left alone with her, and an adult monitors every contact.

Other animals

Acquaintance with other dogs and pets is carried out gradually. The terrier's hunting instinct can manifest itself for rodents and small animals, and large dogs can accidentally injure a small one.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

3/5

Moderately high rating: the breed is attached to the owner, but can be reserved with outsiders. Actual behavior depends on socialization.

Training

3/5

Average score: the dog is smart, but can be stubborn. Short lessons and patience are required.

Zooaggression

3/5

A medium score means that contact with other dogs and small animals requires individual assessment and caution due to size.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

There is no comparable survival estimate for the breed in the British cohort used. The absence of said risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases, and screening of parents is important.

Ease of care

5/5

High rating: The coat of the English Toy Terrier breed is brushed about once a week, and the rest of the care is easy.

Health

Breed screening

Breed Screening: For this breed, a patellar assessment of the knee joints and a BAER puppy hearing test are recommended. Ask for documentary results from both parents.

Locomotor apparatus

Patella dislocation is a known risk in small breeds. Signs: periodic limping, "jumping" on the hind paw. Diagnosis and treatment, sometimes surgical, is prescribed by a veterinarian. Lameness or pain requires evaluation.

Eyes and heart

A preventive examination includes an evaluation of the eyes, heart and teeth. Small breeds are prone to dental diseases, so oral care begins early. The frequency of special inspections is determined by the recommendations of the club and the veterinarian.
