French black and white hound

🇫🇷

History of the breed French black and white hound

Origin: France

Descends from the Sainton Hound, whose origins are not known for certain. The connection with the St. Hubert hound is rejected, but the breed is distantly associated with the white "greyers" of the 16th century. The modern type was developed in the second half of the 19th century after crossings with Poitvain and Gascon-Senton hounds. The standard was adopted in 1957. The population is small: about two thousand dogs.

The French Black and White Hound is a large (62-72 cm) dog with a white background and black markings or spots, light tan above the eyes and on the cheeks. Hunters appreciate him for his fine sense of smell, diligence, serious attitude to work and voice. Friendly and human-oriented, easy to keep in the enclosure. This is a working hound, created for pack hunting, mainly for deer.

3/5

The short coat is easy, but the ears and paws need regular attention.
