French gascon type brak

🇫🇷

History of the breed French breed of the Gascon type

Origin: France

It comes from the old type of French bream, common in the south of France. At the end of the 19th century, the population decreased sharply, and in the 20th century, the breed was restored. At first it was one Brac-France breed, and in 1975 it was divided into two types: the larger Gascon and the smaller Pyrenean. Today, the Gascon type remains primarily a hunting breed, not a decorative companion.

French Shorthair of the Gascon type - tall (58-69 cm, preferably 61-63 cm), strong and noble-looking, light brown with a dense chestnut or chestnut-white coat. Friendly, focused on work and closely attached to people. It is a true hunting dog that needs space, nose work and daily movement. In the yard with nothing to do, such a dog quickly gets bored and invents entertainment on its own.

Life is nearby

It feels best in a family, where there is an opportunity to take long walks and run in safe places every day, and even better - to go hunting or classes with tracking work. It will be restless in a cramped apartment without a load. Does not tolerate prolonged loneliness.

Walks

High Long daily walks, off-leash running in a fenced area and mental tasks are required: search, retrieval, tracking. A short walk around the house is not enough.

Training

Is willing to cooperate if the activities are varied and based on reward. The lying instinct requires early work on the recall: after finding the trail of the bird, the dog can move away from the owner. Rough methods are avoided, because the sensitive breed reacts to them with isolation.

Care

A thick, well-coated coat needs brushing about once a week, more often during shedding. After walks in the bushes, they examine the skin, ears and paws, looking for ticks and burdock root. Long hanging ears are cleaned regularly.

Children

Usually friendly and patient with children, but a large and energetic dog can inadvertently knock a child off its feet. Communication with small children is controlled by an adult. Children are taught not to disturb the dog while eating and resting.

Other animals

In general, useful with other dogs, especially if she grew up among them. The hunting instinct is aimed at birds and small game, so it is better not to trust decorative birds and rodents without supervision. Cats in the same house usually get along if they got to know each other from an early age.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

3/5

She is closely attached to her family and willingly works together with a person.

Training

3/5

Smart and diligent, but the instinct of a sleeper requires hard work on recall.

Zooaggression

3/5

In general, she is calm with dogs, and treats small game and birds like a hunter.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

There is no comparable survival estimate for the breed in the British cohort used. The absence of the mentioned risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases.

Ease of care

4,5/5

Thick wool requires regular combing and checking after walks.

Health

Breed screening

Pedigree screening: There is little reliable data on hereditary diseases of the French Gascon type breed, so the results of examinations of both parents should be requested in writing.

Locomotor apparatus

Musculoskeletal system: for the "French Shorthair of the Gascon type" breed, the load is selected according to age and condition. Limping, pain or reluctance to move is a reason to consult a veterinarian.

Eyes and heart

The condition of the eyes and heart is included in the routine examination. Narrow examinations, for example by an ophthalmologist or a cardiologist, are prescribed as needed. Ask the breeder what tests the parents have passed.
