THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: France
Descends from an old hound from Saintonge, of which only three survived after the French Revolution. In the middle of the 19th century, Count Joseph de Carayon-Latour crossed the latter with Gascon blue hounds. White dogs with black markings were preserved and named Gascon-Saintonges. In the middle of the 20th century, hunters of the south-west of France bred a smaller variety for hunting hares and small game.
The Gascon-Saint-Tongue Hound is a French Hound with a white, black-and-speckled coat, black ears, and red markings above the eyes. Available in two sizes: large (61-72 cm) and small (56-62 cm). An instinctive pack hunter with an excellent sense of smell and voice. Needs space, active work and an experienced owner.

The best conditions are a country house with a large fenced area. The herd instinct makes loneliness difficult. A loud voice is not suitable for dense urban development.
Large hounds hunt wild boar and roe deer, sometimes a wolf, usually in a pack, and small ones - mainly hare and rabbit. Such work requires daily long movement.
His sense of smell is stronger than the request to return, so recall is developed from puppyhood. Patience, short sessions, and sniffing games work better than coercion.
Short hair is combed once a week. Ears are examined and cleaned, claws are trimmed. After hunting, the skin and paws are checked.
Usually family friendly, but large size and strength require supervision when playing with toddlers. The standard does not allow excessively aggressive or timid dogs to be bred.
Instinctively gregarious, so he gets along with other dogs. Small animals are perceived as prey, and it is better not to leave cats outside the family circle alone with them.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.
Medium-high rating: Closely connected to the pack and family, although he relies on his sense of smell in his work. Behavior depends on socialization.
Average score: Strong sense of smell and independence make obedience difficult, so patience and consistency are required.
Medium-high rating: as a pack dog, gets along well with other dogs, and small animals are rated separately.
There are no comparable survival data for the Hound of Gascony in the British cohort used. Just because no risk is listed doesn't mean it doesn't exist: screening parents remains important.
High rating: the short coat is combed weekly, the rest of the care is simple.
Breed Screening: Little is known about the hereditary diseases of the Gascon-Saint-Honhound breed. The breeder is asked for documents with the results of examinations of both parents and current recommendations of the club.
Musculoskeletal system: the growth and load of the "Gascon-Saint-Tongue Hound" dog is adjusted to its age. If lameness or pain occurs, a veterinary examination is required.
Eyes, heart and ears are evaluated during preventive examinations of dogs of the "Gascon-Saint-Hongue" breed. The frequency of additional checks is agreed with the breed club and the veterinarian.
