THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: France
The breed is very old. Initially, there was only the large Vendean - a short-haired variety of the Vendean hound, the origin of which is associated with the "royal white hound" and the Grefier. The Breton Red Griffon, Saint Louis Gray Hound and Bressan Griffon also contributed to the creation of the type. It is used for large game: deer, roe deer, wild boar and fox.
The Grand Griffon Vendée is a tall French hound with a stiff shaggy coat, beard and thick undercoat. The height of males is 62-68 cm, females 60-65 cm. Obedient, but passionate and strong-willed, has a wonderful sense and a beautiful voice. It requires large territories, a firm hand and daily work.

This is a working hunting dog that needs a lot of space and daily movement. He has no place in a city apartment. It lives best in a country house with a strong fence, next to a hunter or an active family.
Daily long work is required: cross-country running, olfactory paths, hiking. The endurance of the breed is designed for many hours of chasing the beast in the undergrowth.
Obedient by nature, but strong-willed and obsessed with the trail, so it needs hard, consistent work. Recall and endurance are practiced from an early age. Off-leash work outside the hunting field is risky.
The thick, hard wool is combed about twice a week so that it does not get lost in tangles on the beard and sides. Ears are examined and cleaned, and after hunting, the skin is checked for thorns, ticks and scratches.
Friendly with the family, but tall, strong and loud, so games with babies are supervised. A field dog is not suitable for families looking for a quiet pet.
He is used to working in a pack, so he usually gets along with dogs. Small animals are prey for him, and stubbornness in pursuit makes cohabitation with cats unpredictable.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.
Average score: The breed is docile, but enthusiastic about the trail and works largely independently. Behavior depends on upbringing and experience.
High score: The breed is docile in nature and learns well under a firm, consistent approach, although it is more attracted to the trail than to commands.
Average score: gregarious and peaceful towards dogs, and the attitude towards small animals is determined by the hunting instinct.
The survival rate of the Greater Vendée Griffon in the British cohort is not comparable. The absence of the described risks does not guarantee the absence of hereditary diseases, so the breeder is asked for the results of the parents' examinations.
High score: Grooming is limited to weekly brushing, ear and skin inspection after hunting.
Breed Screening: There is little detailed information on hereditary diseases of the Greater Vendée Griffon breed. Ask the breeder for documentary results of examinations of both parents and current recommendations of the club.
Musculoskeletal apparatus: for the breed "Grande Vendée Griffon", the load is selected according to age and condition. Limping, pain or reluctance to move is a reason to consult a veterinarian.
The preventive examination for the Griffon Vendée covers the eyes, heart and ears; the breed club and veterinarian will tell you how often to do special checks.
