Origin: Germany
A German breed whose name comes from Middle High German words meaning "guardian of the yard". After the Middle Ages, it was supplanted by other guard dogs, in particular German shepherds. Around 1915, enthusiasts led by zoologist Kurt Friedrich Koenig revived the breed from Black Forest farm dogs by crossing them with several other breeds. The first litter was registered in 1922. The Second World War almost destroyed the breed, and in 1947 a new club was created in Coburg. The German Kennel Club recognized her in 1937.
