Istrian short-haired hound

🇭🇷

History of the Istrian short-haired hound breed

Origin: Croatia

Descended from an older type of East Adriatic White Hound with markings. The earliest evidence is a carving in the Franciscan monastery in Dubrovnik, dating from 1327-1348. Later images include a painting from 1474 near Beram and an altarpiece from 1476 in Zadar, where the dog is depicted as a tricolor. FCI first published the standard in 1955.

The Istrian short-haired hound is a medium (49-53 cm in males, 47-51 cm in females) Croatian hound with a short, dense, shiny coat. The color is snow-white with orange spots. Lively, but gentle, obedient, neither nervous nor aggressive. Loyal to the owner, wary of strangers. Easy to learn, appreciated for work on rocky karst; the voice is strong and melodious.
