Niverne griffon

🇫🇷

History of the Nivern Griffon breed

Origin: France

Nivernes griffons were kept by the French nobility, but after the French Revolution the breed disappeared. From 1925, hunters in Morvan recreated it on the basis of the large Vendée griffon, adding outhounds and foxhounds. The original dogs were much larger and hunted wolves and wild boars in the 14th century. For a long time the breed remained rare, now it is being revived.

The Nivernes griffon is a medium (55-60 cm) French hound with a coarse shaggy gray-red coat, an elongated body and a steady gait. Brave, but stubborn and independent. Needs a lot of movement and an owner who understands hunting dogs.
