Picardy shepherd dog

🇫🇷

History of the Picardy Sheepdog breed

Origin: France

A very ancient breed: it is believed to have been developed by the Celts around 400 BC. e., but it did not necessarily arise only in Picardy. Similar hard-coated sheepdogs were common in northwestern Europe. The modern breed was formed by Picardy farmers. Recognized in 1992.

Picardy shepherd dog (Berger Picard) is a medium-large (55-65 cm) French shepherd dog with semi-long, stiff, wavy hair, eyebrows and a beard. Balanced, lively, alert and confident; good family dog. Needs a lot of movement and activities.

Life is nearby

Suitable for active families with a yard. He works on the farm as a shepherd and watchman, and at home he protects and befriends.

Smart and responsive, willing to learn. Classes are varied, with rewards. Can be reserved with strangers, but not timid.

Care

The stiff, wavy coat is not flat, curly, or clipped. Regular combing is enough, without a complicated haircut. Ears are examined, claws are trimmed.

Children

Known as an excellent family dog that loves close contact with children. Supervised games due to vigor.

Other animals

The shepherd's instinct is preserved. Acquaintances are gradual.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

3/5

High score: balanced and attached to the family. Behavior depends on upbringing.

Training

4/5

Medium-high rating: clever.

Zooaggression

Average score: shepherd's instinct.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

There is no comparable survival estimate for the breed in the British cohort used. The absence of the mentioned risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases.

Ease of care

4,5/5

Average score: hard semi-long coat needs moderate care.

Health

Breed screening

Breed screening: there are few descriptions of hereditary diseases of the Picardy Sheepdog breed. Ask the breeder for the written results of the parents' examinations and the current requirements of the club.

Locomotor apparatus

Musculoskeletal system: growth, weight and load of the "Picardian shepherd" breed should correspond to the age. Pain, lameness, or reluctance to move require a veterinary examination.

Eyes and heart

During preventive visits, the veterinarian checks the eyes and the heart. The schedule of in-depth checks is coordinated with the veterinarian and the breed club. It is useful to keep the results in the veterinary passport.
