Long-haired collie

🇬🇧

History of the Longhaired Collie breed

Origin: Great Britain

Collies were bred to herd sheep in the rugged hills of Scotland, and their thick wool protected them on mountain farms. Subsequently, the head of the breed was improved, and its popularity was increased by the sympathy of Queen Victoria. The world fame of the family dog was brought by American films, in particular about Lassie.

The long-haired collie is a majestic herding dog with thick, long hair, a lush mane and a graceful narrow muzzle. Males 56-61 cm, females 51-56 cm. Gentle, sensitive and very devoted to the family. Requires gentle upbringing, regular brushing and care with the eyes.

Life is nearby

It is suitable for a family where the dog lives near people, and not alone in the yard. Does not require huge loads, but loves to play and walk. Nervousness is considered a flaw of the breed, so a noisy environment does not suit him.

Walks

Smaller than you might expect from the size: enough yard for playing and regular walking, about forty minutes a day. Mind games and simple pastoral sports are also useful.

Training

Sensitive dog: responds well to soft upbringing and a warm tone, and rudeness upsets him. Short sessions with praise work better than repetition. Collies are prone to barking, so this habit is corrected from puppyhood.

Care

One or two brushings a week are enough for a neat look, but a show dog needs much more. It is better not to comb the wool completely dry, but to moisten it slightly. Ears are examined, claws are trimmed.

Children

Gentle and patient, gets along well with children and willingly protects them. The shepherd's habit of chasing can manifest itself during the run, so the games need supervision.

Other animals

Usually peaceful with dogs and pets. The herding habit can be manifested towards small animals and running children.
