History of the Sharplaninets breed

Origin: Serbia and North Macedonia

Named after the Shar-Planina mountain range (Serbia and Macedonia), where it is most common. The origin is definitely unknown, perhaps the ancestors came to Europe from Asia during prehistoric migrations. The breed was bred for a long time in the mountainous regions of the southeast of the former Yugoslavia. FCI registered it in 1939 as "Illyrian Shepherd Dog", and in 1957 it was renamed "Yugoslav Shepherd Dog Sharplaninska". Traditionally protects livestock from predators.

Sharplaninets (Yugoslav shepherd dog) is a large guard dog: males about 62 cm and 35-45 kg, bitches about 58 cm and 30-40 kg. Strong, balanced, reliable, guards without attacks and faithfully serves the owner. Thick, long wool, usually a solid color from white to almost black. Needs an experienced owner, space and early socialization.
