THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: The Netherlands
The Schapendus was well known in the Netherlands around 1900 and was prized for its intelligence and tirelessness. After World War II, the breed was revived from the few remaining dogs. The first club was founded in 1947, the standard was written in 1954, and full recognition came in 1971.
Schapendus (Netherlands Shepherd) is a medium (40-51 cm) herding dog with fluffy semi-long double-layered hair, bangs, mustache and beard. Attentive, brave, intelligent and very devoted to the family; great jumper Needs a lot of movement and activities.

Suitable for active families who need a dog for sports and tasks. Hardy, lively and fast.
High: running, jumping, games and tasks every day.
A real shepherd by nature, intelligent and attentive. Classes are varied, with rewards. Feels good in agility.
The coat is dense, thin and dry, never silky, can stick out in strands. It is combed regularly, especially on the bangs, beard and hind legs. Ears are examined, claws are trimmed.
Very devoted and affectionate with her family. The shepherd's passion can be manifested in chasing children, so the games are supervised.
The shepherd's instinct is preserved. Acquaintances are gradual.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.
Very high score: very devoted to family. Behavior depends on upbringing.
Very high score: intelligent and attentive.
Average score: shepherd's instinct.
There is no comparable survival estimate for the breed in the British cohort used. The absence of the mentioned risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases.
Medium-low rating: Fluffy coat requires regular brushing.
Pedigree Screening: There is little reliable data on the hereditary diseases of the Shapendus breed, so the results of examinations of both parents should be requested in writing.
Musculoskeletal system: the growth and load of the Shapendus dog are adjusted to its age. If lameness or pain occurs, a veterinary examination is required.
The condition of the eyes and heart is included in the routine examination. How often to do special examinations is suggested by the breed club and the doctor. Ask the breeder what tests the parents have passed.
