Short-haired Italian Segujio

🇮🇹

History of the Short-haired Italian Segujo breed

Origin: Italy

Italian hound, whose ancestors are associated with the ancient hounds of Egypt, which spread to the Mediterranean. Similar dogs are depicted in Egyptian paintings, in sculptures of Diana in the museums of Naples and Vatican, as well as in a painting of 1600 from the castle of Borso d'Este. Over the centuries, the structure of the body has hardly changed. In the FCI classification, it belongs to medium hounds of group 6.

Short-haired Italian Seguggio is a medium-sized hunting hound (48-58 cm, 18-28 kg) with short, dense, smooth red or black-tan color. Steady, hardy, with a sonorous voice. He looks for a trail, as a rule, himself, and not on someone else's team. Needs a lot of movement and an owner who understands hunting dogs.

Life is nearby

A hunting dog, it feels best in a house with a plot and regular forays into nature. In the apartment without enough movement, he gets bored and howls.

Walks

Long daily walks and the ability to run in a safe place are required. The breed is hardy and fast, bred for hunting hare and wild boar.

Training

Works both alone and in a pack. The sense of smell and excitement often prevails in teams, so you will need patience, short sessions and a reliable leash on walks.

Care

The short-haired skin is brushed once or twice a week. Ears are examined especially carefully, nails are trimmed, teeth are cleaned.

Children

The breed is restrained and calm. Contacts with small children are supervised, and loud games can excite the dog.

Other animals

Accustomed to working in a pack, so he generally gets along with dogs. Small animals and domestic cats can become prey for a hunter.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

3/5

Average score: reserved breed, not too sociable. Behavior depends on socialization.

Training

3/5

Average score: hard-working, but the sense of smell distracts attention from teams.

Zooaggression

3/5

Average score: works well in a pack, small animals need control.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

There is no comparable survival estimate for the breed in the British cohort used. The absence of the mentioned risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases.

Ease of care

3/5

Average score: coat is short and uncomplicated, but requires ear checks and regular walks.

Health

Breed screening

Breed screening: there are few descriptions of hereditary diseases of the Italian Shorthaired Pointer breed. Ask the breeder for the written results of the parents' examinations and the current requirements of the club.

Locomotor apparatus

Musculoskeletal system: the growth and load of the Italian Shorthaired Pointer breed should be age-appropriate. Lameness, pain, or reluctance to move require a veterinary examination.

Eyes and heart

Eyes and heart are checked during routine examinations. The frequency of special examinations is determined according to the recommendations of the club and the veterinarian.
