THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: Sweden
It originates from Sweden in the 16th century and is considered the oldest Swedish breed of hound. Soldiers returning from the wars of the Swedish Empire brought hounds, which were crossed with local spitz-type dogs. Breeding began in the 19th century, the Swedish Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1921. Breeders restored the natural short tail. Currently, only about sixty puppies are registered in Sweden per year, so the breed is rare.
Smolandstevare is the smallest of the Swedish hounds (about 41-53 cm, 15-20 kg), compact, strong, almost square format. Gentle, protective, attached to the owner, wary of strangers. Very intelligent and requires a lot of movement.

Suitable for hunters and active families with space. Not suitable for a small apartment.
High: long walks and running; active until about 12 years of age.
Very intelligent, but the sense of smell is distracting. Patience, reliable recall and fencing are required.
The wool is combed once a week. Ears are examined, claws are trimmed.
Gentle and attached to the owner. Contacts with children under supervision.
Can be territorial. Traditionally drives game to the hunter: hares, squirrels, foxes, birds, moose. Small animals are prey.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.
High Score: Bonded to owner. Behavior depends on upbringing.
Medium-High Rating: Smart, but the sense of smell is distracting.
Average score: territorial, small animals - prey.
There is no comparable survival estimate for the breed in the British cohort used. The absence of the mentioned risk does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases.
High score: plain wool.
Pedigree screening: There is little reliable data on the hereditary diseases of the Smolandstevare breed, so the results of examinations of both parents should be requested in writing.
Musculoskeletal system: the growth and load of the Smolandstevare breed dog are coordinated with its age. If lameness or pain occurs, a veterinary examination is required.
During preventive visits, the veterinarian checks the eyes and the heart. The frequency of special examinations is determined according to the recommendations of the club and the veterinarian. Ask the breeder what tests the parents have passed.
