THE PAW CATALOG
Origin: France
Pyrenean shepherd dogs herded flocks in mountain pastures, often with a larger Pyrenean mountain dog guarding the herd. The French Kennel Club recognizes the smooth-faced variety as a separate breed from the long-haired. Ear and tail docking is less common nowadays, as it is prohibited or restricted in many countries.
The smooth-faced Pyrenean shepherd is a small (40-54 cm, up to 15 kg) lively herding dog with short fur on the face. Very smart, quick in reactions, attentive to others. A real "ball of fire", durable in motion. Needs daily work, supervision and education from an early age.

Suitable for very active people, ready for daily work. It becomes noisy and nervous in a cramped apartment without a load. Strangers are wary, although the smooth-faced variety is considered less suspicious than the long-haired.
Extremely active and hardy: easily covers more than 30 km per day. Daily long walks, running, games and mental tasks are needed.
Very intelligent and motor, quickly learns exercises, can be mischievous. Useful agility, herd work, obedience. Nervous energy requires clear rules and mental effort.
Short hair is combed once a week, more often during the shedding period. Claws are trimmed, teeth are cleaned, ears are examined. Bathing as needed.
Lively, ready to play, but a shepherd's habit of chasing may show itself with children who run. Games require supervision, and the dog is taught not to touch with its teeth.
Usually gets along with dogs when socialized, although may try to control their movement. Small animals require familiarity with caution.
Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.
Average score: smart and attached to her own, but wary of strangers. Behavior depends on upbringing.
High score: very intelligent and quick to learn exercises, but nervous energy needs constant practice.
Average score: gets along with dogs, but the shepherd's habit of chasing needs correction.
The British cohort does not provide a comparative survival estimate for the Smooth-Muzzled Pyrenean Shepherd breed. The absence of the mentioned risks does not prove the absence of hereditary diseases, and parents should be checked in any case.
High score: short coat is easy, so care is reduced to brushing and hygiene.
Breed Screening: There is little reliable data on hereditary diseases of the Smooth-Muzzled Pyrenean Shepherd breed, so the results of examinations of both parents should be requested in writing.
Musculoskeletal system: growth, weight and load of the "Gladkomorda Pyrenean Shepherd" breed should correspond to the age. Pain, lameness, or reluctance to move require a veterinary examination.
A preventive examination includes the eyes, heart and ears. For the "Gladkomorda Pyrenean Shepherd" breed, the frequency of special inspections is determined by the advice of the club and the veterinarian.
