Smooth Fox Terrier

🇬🇧

History of the smooth-haired fox terrier breed

Origin: Great Britain

An English breed, probably descended from smooth-coated black and tan terriers mixed with bull terriers, greyhounds and beagles. White smooth-haired terriers were used to lure foxes out of burrows as early as the end of the 18th century. For a long time it was considered a variant of the Fox Terrier, and was recognized by the AKC as a separate breed in 1984.

The smooth-haired fox terrier is a slender, lively English dog of medium size: about 39 cm at the withers, up to 8 kg. The coat is short, stiff and shiny, usually white with a dark head. Playful, alert, loud. Needs daily activity, occupation and reliable fencing.

Life is nearby

Suitable for active people who walk and play with their dog every day. Barks every visitor, so sensitive neighbors can complain. On a walk, it is kept on a leash or in a fenced area: the pursuit of small animals cannot be stopped by a command.

Walks

High: daily walks, running and games. Without movement and tasks, he quickly starts digging, barking and destroying things.

Training

Smart and willing to learn, but gets bored quickly and seems stubborn. Classes should be varied, fun and rewarding. Often successful in agility, flyball and rail.

Care

Minimal: the short coat is combed once a week. Claws are trimmed, teeth are cleaned, ears are cleaned as needed.

Children

Gets along best with older children who have been taught to behave gently. An irritated dog can bite, so he should not be left unattended with children.

Other animals

Fighting with other dogs and chasing small animals. At the same time, he gets along well with cats and dogs of the opposite sex, if he grew up with them.

Peculiarities of the breed

Estimates help compare breeds. For zooaggression, 5/5 means less tendency to aggression towards dogs. The behavior and health of a particular dog depend on many factors.

Human orientation

5/5

High score: The Fox Terrier is closely related to the family and willingly participates in its affairs. Behavior depends on socialization.

Training

3/5

Average Score: Smart, but gets bored quickly and can get stuck, so variety is needed.

Zooaggression

3/5

Average score: there are fights with dogs, and there is a strong hunting interest in small animals.

Health and reproductive risks

3/5

There is no comparable survival estimate for the breed in the British cohort used. Among the described breed risks: dislocation of the patella, heart disease; also called eye and joint problems; examination of the parents is confirmed with the veterinarian.

Ease of care

3,5/5

Medium-high rating: Short coat is easy to care for, but requires daily activity and claw trimming.

Health

Dislocation of the patella

Dislocation of the patella occurs in small breeds. Signs: periodic jumping on the hind paw. The degree is assessed by a veterinarian.

Heart diseases

Heart disease is listed as a possible risk. The heart is listened to during preventive examinations, and prolonged fatigue or cough are not ignored.
